The short answer
Waikoloa Beach Resort is about 18 to 19 miles north of Kona International Airport (KOA), a 25 to 35 minute drive up Queen Kaahumanu Highway. A rental car is the easiest way to cover that distance and the days after, though taxis, rideshare, and private car services all serve the route if you’d rather skip the counter. The drive itself
Out of KOA, Queen Kaahumanu Highway runs one straight line north through open lava fields, the Pacific on your left for most of the drive. There is a single turn, at the Waikoloa Beach Resort entrance, and from there it is a few more minutes past the golf course to Hali’i Kai’s gates.
Arriving after dark changes the drive more than the distance suggests. The highway itself has no streetlights for long stretches, so the lava fields disappear into black on either side and the stars take over, until the resort’s landscape lighting appears at the turn. It is an easy drive even at night, just a darker one than daytime arrivals expect.
