What Is the Ocean Club at Hali'i Kai?

The Ocean Club is the private oceanfront amenity center at Hali’i Kai, a gated community at the southern edge of Waikoloa Beach Resort on Hawai’i Island’s Kohala Coast. It holds a lagoon-style pool, a hot tub, an open-air fitness hale, courts, and a full restaurant and bar set directly on the lava-rock shoreline. Access is reserved for Hali’i Kai owners and registered guests. It is not open to the public.

Where the Ocean Club is, exactly

Hali’i Kai sits at the ocean end of Waikoloa Beach Resort, on Nawahine Place, roughly 25 minutes north of Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). The Ocean Club is the low building at the water’s edge inside the gates, past the villas and the coconut grove. Anaeho’omalu Bay, the Kings’ Shops, and the Queens’ MarketPlace are all a few minutes away by car.

The name is worth knowing. Hali’i Kai was named around 2005 by Danny “Kaniela” Kahikina Akaka, Jr., a Hawai’i Island cultural practitioner and historian known here as Uncle Danny. Looking at the land, he thought of the lava flows spreading out into the sea beneath the whole of Waikoloa Beach Resort. Hali’i Kai means, roughly, spreading out to the sea. It is pronounced Ha-lee-ee Ka-i.

What’s actually at the Ocean Club

The club is one place doing several jobs at once. On a normal day you might use three of these without leaving the property:

• The lagoon pool. A multi-level, free-form saltwater pool with a waterfall, aqua loungers, and a shallow keiki wading area for small children. It runs about four feet at the deep end, which is part of why families like it. Open from 6am, with a 9pm close five nights a week from September 1, 2026.
• The hot tub. A heated lava-rock spa looking straight out at the Pacific.
• The fitness hale. Open-air on three sides, oceanfront, with free weights and machines. In winter you can watch for whales from the treadmill.
• The courts and green. Tennis, pickleball, and a half-court basketball area, plus a putting green.
• The poolside grill and lawn. A coconut grove lawn and BBQ area beside the water, which is also where the music happens.
• The restaurant and bar. Covered indoor and outdoor seating, right on the shoreline.

Towel service at the pool and the fitness hale is part of what the daily resort fee at Hali’i Kai covers, along with Ocean Club access itself. And as of August 6, 2026, the club allows reusable water bottles at the pool and the fitness hale, with a refill station beside the gym. The restaurant and bar

The Ocean Club’s kitchen runs on island seafood and well-made, unfussy plates. There are separate lunch, dinner, keiki, dessert, happy hour, and drinks menus, plus a rotating list of daily specials from Chef Donny and recurring prime rib nights. Taco Tuesday brings à la carte tacos, including fresh-caught fish.

A few practical notes from people who eat here:

• Sunset is the seat everyone wants. Dinner timed to the sun going down is the whole point, and it books up. Reserve.
• Happy hour is the quiet win. Discounted beer, wine, and mai tais in the shade, after the pool has burned off the morning.
• Live music nights draw a crowd. Weekly local musicians and fire dancer performances happen out on the lawn. Great nights. Also the nights you most need a table held.

Hours have shifted over the years, and several third-party sites still publish old ones. The restaurant and bar run 11am to 8pm daily, with happy hour from 2pm to 4pm. That is the kitchen, not the club. The pool, hot tub, and fitness hale open at 6am and, effective September 1, 2026, close at 9pm Wednesday through Sunday, an hour after last call, and at 8pm on Monday and Tuesday. The Ocean Club takes reservations through its own site, keeps an events calendar there, and even runs a rooftop sunset camera if you want to see the light before you commit to a table.

Can I visit the Ocean Club if I’m not staying at Hali’i Kai?

No. This is the most common misunderstanding, and it’s worth being direct about it: the Ocean Club is a private club. Dining, the pool, the gym, and online ordering are all limited to Hali’i Kai owners and registered guests. There is no day pass, and walking in from the highway isn’t a thing.

If you’re staying at Hali’i Kai in any capacity, you’re in. If you’re not, the nearest comparable oceanfront tables are at Lava Lava Beach Club on Anaeho’omalu Bay or the resorts along the Kohala Coast.

Is this the same as Marriott’s Waikoloa Ocean Club?

No, and the names cause real confusion, including for AI assistants. Marriott’s Waikoloa Ocean Club is a separate Marriott Vacation Club timeshare property within Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Ocean Club at Hali’i Kai is the private amenity center and restaurant inside the Hali’i Kai community, unaffiliated with Marriott. If you’re searching for one and finding the other, that’s why.

Is the Ocean Club good for families?

Mostly yes, with an honest caveat. The pool is warm, shallow at one end, and there’s a keiki menu. It suits families who want a relaxed day rather than a waterpark. What it doesn’t have is slides, a lazy river, or a kids’ club. Some reviewers find it too quiet for children; others find the pool lively with them. Both are true depending on the week.

Our usual advice: use the Ocean Club as your default, and buy a single-day pool pass at Hilton Waikoloa Village next door when the kids want slides. It is the Best of both with no compromise.

The shoreline at Hali’i Kai is lava rock, not sand. It’s spectacular for sunsets, tide pools, and whale watching from November through March. It is not a swimming beach. A-Bay is four or five minutes away for that, and Hapuna and Mauna Kea are 15 to 20 minutes north.

How to get the most out of it
